Notice of Series Changes with the Update to North American Industry Classification System 2012 and Annual Benchmark Release on February 3, 2012

With the release of January 2012 data on February 3, 2012, the Current Employment Statistics (CES) program updated the National Nonfarm Payroll series to the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) 2012 from the NAICS 2007 basis and also released the annual benchmark revision. For more information about NAICS in the CES program, see www.bls.gov/ces/naics/home.htm.

Update to NAICS 2012

The conversion to NAICS 2012 resulted in minor content changes within the Manufacturing and the Retail trade sectors, as well as minor coding changes within the Utilities and the Leisure and hospitality sectors. Several industry titles and descriptions also were updated. All employee (AE) series are published at a more detailed level than AE hours and earnings, production employee (PE), women employee (WE), or PE hours and earnings series, collectively called Non-AE series. The Non-AE series were sometimes unaffected or affected at a less-detailed level than the AE series. Consequently, tables are provided below for both the AE and Non-AE series.

Detailed tables on AE series affected by the update to NAICS 2012:

Detailed tables on Non-AE series affected by the update to NAICS 2012:

For more information on the NAICS 2007 and the NAICS 2012, please see www.census.gov/epcd/www/naics.html.

Changes as a Result of Annual Sample Review

All CES series are evaluated annually for sample size, coverage, and response rates. Some very small industries no longer have sufficient sample to be estimated and published separately. In some cases all Non-AE series were affected while in others only WE or overtime series were discontinued, as noted in the table titles. The following series were discontinued due to this evaluation:

The CES survey also updated industry titles to reflect similar changes in the NAICS 2012 update. In most cases the scope of each industry is not affected by the title changes, except where the industries are also listed in the "Change in Scope" tables listed above.

For example, for CES NAICS 2012 series 31-321990 All other wood products, approximately 97.3 percent of the employment comes from CES NAICS 2007 series 31-321990 All other wood products, and approximately 2.7 percent from 31-337129 Miscellaneous household and institutional furniture. Ratios may not add up to 100 percent for a CES NAICS 2012 series due to rounding.
