To users of the 2019 and 2020 Consumer Expenditure Public Use Microdata files:
There were several corrections that took place in the 2019 and 2020 data files, and although the 2019 and 2020 publication tables were impacted, the size of the changes do not meet the CE program’s threshold criteria for republication. Please note that all associated summary variables have also been updated accordingly.
A list of the changes are as follows:
- In the Diary survey for 2020 in quarter 4 two expenditures were deemed outliers and changed, this affected two NEWIDs:
- NEWID 04632122 had an expenditure for UCC 040110, Bacon, corrected to $5.20
- NEWID 04631902 had an expenditure for UCC 120110, Potatoes, corrected to $20.00
- In the Interview survey for 2020 quarter 4 one expenditure for one NEWID was double counted in both EOVB and EAPB:
- NEWID 04405443 had a $21,344 expenditure for UCC 600901, water sports equipment, removed from EAPB
- For 2019 and 2020 in the Interview Survey the records for pre-paid cellular minutes were incorrectly mapped to no UCCs; the variable PRPYCLX in UTP has now been mapped to UCC 270102
- For 2020 in the Diary survey records for Internet Services which were reported in a bundle were incorrectly mapped to UCC 690116 Internet Services Away from home, those records have now been mapped to UCC 690114 Computer Information Services
No additional addenda are necessary, as the files currently available for download have the appropriate addenda applied. The corrected addenda were added on March 10, 2022. The updated files have replaced the previous versions of the 2019 and 2020 PUMD online.
