Retention rate is calculated by dividing the number of respondents interviewed in Round 18 by the number of respondents first interviewed in Round 1 (1997). The number of respondents eligible for the interview (including deceased respondents) was 8,984 beginning in Round 1 (1997).

Retention rate is calculated by dividing the number of respondents interviewed in Round 27 by the number of eligible respondents remaining eligible for interview. In the round 27 (2006) survey, 6912 respondents out of the 9,964 eligible respondents were interviewed. Included in the eligible sample are deceased and difficult to field respondents whom NORC does not attempt to contact.
