On May 15–16, 2013, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Safety and Health Statistics (OSHS) program held a special data users’ workshop in Washington D.C. The gathering, which coincided with the 40-year anniversary of the OSHS program, was attended by many data users and researchers in the health and safety community within government, private industry, labor, and academia. The workshop included keynote speeches from data users, researchers, and stakeholders. There also were presentations of papers by safety and health professionals.
During the next few weeks, the Monthly Labor Review will publish a series of papers from the OSHS workshop on a variety of topics regarding work-related injuries, illnesses, and fatalities from the Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (SOII) and Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI). This series of articles consists of
· “Using workplace safety and health data for injury prevention”
· “An analysis of fatal occupational injuries at road construction sites, 2003–2010”
· “Using OSHA inspection data for surveillance of Respirator Protection Programs”—coming soon
· “Fatal occupational injuries involving contractors, 2011: a visual essay”—coming December 2013
· “Life, limbs, and licensing: occupational regulation, wages, and workplace safety of electricians”—coming December 2013
