Consumer Prices in May 2010

Over the last 12 months, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 2.0 percent before seasonal adjustment.

The food index has risen 0.7 percent over the last 12 months. The index for food at home rose 0.3 percent during that period, and the index for food away from home rose 1.1 percent.

The energy index has risen 14.7 percent over the last 12 months. All components of the energy index increased during that period, including a 27.0-percent increase in the gasoline index.

The index for all items less food and energy has risen 0.9 percent over the last 12 months, well below the 2.0-percent average annual increase over the past 10 years.

The indexes for shelter (-0.7 percent) and apparel (-0.6 percent) have both declined over the past 12 months.
