In August 2014, among all states, Washington had the highest share of statewide total nonfarm employment in the information industry (3.6 percent). Information includes publishing industries, both traditional and exclusively on the Internet; the motion picture and sound recording industries; broadcasting industries, including traditional broadcasting and those broadcasting exclusively over the Internet; telecommunications industries; Web search portals, data processing, and information services industries.

Following Washington as the state with the highest share of total nonfarm employment in information were California (3.1 percent), New York (2.9 percent), Colorado (2.8 percent), and Massachusetts (2.7 percent). Arkansas (1.1 percent), Mississippi (1.1 percent), and Nevada (1.1 percent) had the smallest share.
