From March to June 2014, the net employment gain in private industry was 916,000; gross job gains were 7.4 million, and gross job losses totaled 6.5 million. Gross job gains outnumbered gross job losses in every private industry except utilities. Utilities had a net employment loss of 1,000 jobs.

The professional and business services industry had a net increase of 202,000 jobs in the second quarter of 2014. Construction experienced its largest net change—a gain of 95,000 jobs—since the first quarter of 2006.
