There were 5.0 million job openings on the last business day of January, little changed from 4.9 million in December. Hires decreased to 5.0 million in January and separations changed little at 4.8 million.

Among the major industries in January 2015, leisure and hospitality had the highest separations rate (5.6 percent), hires rate (5.9 percent), and job openings rate (4.8 percent). Construction also had a high hires rate (5.8 percent) and separations rate (5.3 percent), but a lower job openings rate (1.9 percent).
