Job openings and labor turnover, January 2015

There were 5.0 million job openings on the last business day of January, little changed from 4.9 million in December. Hires decreased to 5.0 million in January and separations changed little at 4.8 million.

Among the major industries in January 2015, trade, transportation, and utilities had the most hires (1.1 million) and separations (1.1 million). The industry had 876,000 job openings in January.

In January, professional and business services had the most job openings at 927,000. The industry had about 1 million hires and 1 million separations during the month.

Among the major industries in January 2015, leisure and hospitality had the highest separations rate (5.6 percent), hires rate (5.9 percent), and job openings rate (4.8 percent). Construction also had a high hires rate (5.8 percent) and separations rate (5.3 percent), but a lower job openings rate (1.9 percent).
