Consumer prices up 2.2 percent over 12 months ended November 2018

From November 2017 to November 2018, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose 2.2 percent, the same as the increase for the year ending November 2017. Over the year ending November 2018, energy prices rose 3.1 percent, the smallest 12-month increase since the year ending June 2017.

Food prices increased 1.4 percent for the year ended November 2018. Prices for food at home increased 0.4 percent, while prices for food away from home rose 2.6 percent. In November 2018, prices for cereals and bakery products rose 1.3 percent, the largest 12-month increase among the six grocery store food groups. 

Within energy, gasoline prices rose 5.0 percent for the 12 months ending November 2018, and fuel oil prices increased 16.1 percent. Electricity prices increased 0.6 percent and natural gas prices declined 2.1 percent.

From November 2017 to November 2018, prices for all items less food and energy rose 2.2 percent. Shelter prices rose 3.2 percent and prices for medical care services rose 2.4 percent, as prices for hospital services rose 3.5 percent.
