From April 2018 to April 2019, nonfarm payroll employment increased by 2,620,000, or 1.8 percent. Over that period, industries with significant changes in employment included individual and family services (+100,000, or 4.1 percent) and sporting goods, hobby, book, and music stores (−37,700, or −6.3 percent).

Within the health care industry, employment in home health care services increased 70,000 over the year ended April 2019, an increase of 4.8 percent. Ambulatory health care services industries such as offices of physicians (+59,200) and dentists (+34,100) also had significant job gains.
For the year ended April 2019, employment in the professional and business services industry increased by 535,000, or 2.6 percent. Within this industry, the computer systems design and related services added 94,400 jobs (4.5 percent). Employment also increased in architectural engineering services (+42, 500) and accounting and bookkeeping services (+37,300).
From April 2018 to April 2019, within the transportation and warehousing industry, employment in warehousing and storage increased by 68,400, or 6.1 percent. Truck (+34,900) and air transportation (+16,100) also had job gains. However, employment decreased in rail transportation (−1,200).
Other industries with decreases in employment over the year ending April 2019 were telecommunications (−29,600), electronics and appliance stores (−23,300), department stores (−23,200), commercial banking (−16,100), printing and related support activities (−11,900), and apparel (−8,200).
