Unemployment rate highest in El Centro, California, lowest in Ames, Iowa, January 2019

In January, El Centro, California, had the highest unemployment rate at 18.5 percent, followed by Yuma, Arizona, at 15.3 percent. Ames, Iowa, had the lowest unemployment rate at 1.9 percent, followed by Burlington-South Burlington, Vermont, at 2.1 percent. Unemployment rates were below the U.S. rate of 4.4 percent in 198 metropolitan areas and above it in 176 areas. Rates were equal to the national rate in 15 areas.
