Compensation costs for private industry workers increased 2.4 percent from September 2019 to September 2020. This compares with an increase of 2.7 percent for the year ended September 2019. Compensation costs in leisure and hospitality increased 4.1 percent for the year ended September 2020.

In September 2020, other industries with an over-the-year increase in compensation costs greater than that for all private workers were transportation and warehousing (3.1 percent), other services except public administration (2.8 percent), and retail trade and information (2.7 percent each).
Compensation cost increases for the year ending in September 2020 ranged from 2.2 percent in the Northeast region to 2.8 percent in the West region. Within the South region, compensation costs for workers in Washington-Baltimore-Arlington, DC-MD-VA-WV-PA increased 3.6 percent, while increasing 1.5 percent in Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Port St. Lucie, Florida.
