Employment up more than 5.0 percent over the year in New Hanover County, NC, and Adams County, CO

From September 2018 to September 2019, employment increased in 283 of the 355 largest U.S. counties. New Hanover County, North Carolina (part of the Wilmington metropolitan area), had the largest over-the-year increase in employment with a gain of 5.8 percent. In Adams County, Colorado (part of the Denver area), employment increased 5.3 percent over the year ended in September 2019.

Employment grew by more than 4.0 percent in Richmond County, New York (in the New York City area); York County, South Carolina (part of the Charlotte, North Carolina, area); and Durham County, North Carolina (part of the Durham-Chapel Hill area).

Bay, Florida (part of the Panama City area), experienced the largest over-the-year percentage decrease in employment, with a loss of 5.9 percent. Decreases of 3.0 percent or more were also recorded in Calcasieu, Louisiana, and Elkhart, Indiana.

Three counties in California's San Francisco and San Jose metropolitan areas—Santa Clara, San Mateo, and San Francisco—had average weekly wages of $2,273 or higher, the highest among the 355 largest counties during the third quarter of 2019. Average weekly wages were $2,055 in New York County (Manhattan), in the New York City area. Average weekly wages were less than $700 in Hidalgo, Texas; Horry, South Carolina; and Cameron, Texas.

Among the 10 largest counties, Maricopa, Arizona (part of the Phoenix area), had the largest over-the-year percentage gain in employment, 3.2 percent. All of the 10 largest counties had over-the-year percentage increases in employment and average weekly wages.
