From December 2019 to March 2020, the difference between the number of job gains and the number of job losses yielded a net employment loss of 773,000 jobs in the private sector. Over this period, job losses exceeded job gains in 46 states and D.C.

For the quarter ended in March 2020, Alaska (9.2%), Wyoming (8.6%), and Montana (7.7%) had the highest number of job gains as a percent of total employment. Those states also had the highest number job losses as a percent of total employment: Alaska (9.5%), Wyoming (9.3%), and Montana (7.7%).
