The second quarter of 2021 is the fourth consecutive quarter with increases in both output and hours worked, following historic declines in those measures in the second quarter of 2020.
These measures are based on more recent source data than were available for the preliminary report released earlier. The 2.1 percent productivity increase in nonfarm business sector in the second quarter of 2021 is a 0.2-percentage point downward revision from the preliminary estimate of 2.3 percent. This reflects a 0.2-percentage point upward revision to output and a 0.5-percentage point upward revision to hours worked.
These data are from the Labor Productivity and Costs program and are seasonally adjusted annual rates, subject to revision. To learn more, see "Productivity and Costs — Second Quarter 2021, Revised." Also see Charts related to the latest "Productivity and Costs" news release. Labor productivity, or output per hour, is calculated by dividing an index of real output by an index of hours worked for all persons, including employees, proprietors, and unpaid family workers.
