Real average hourly earnings down 1.7 percent over the 12 months ending June 2021

Real average hourly earnings for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls decreased 1.7 percent from June 2020 to June 2021. The change in real average hourly earnings combined with an increase of 0.3 percent in the average workweek resulted in a 1.4-percent decrease in real average weekly earnings over this period. The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose 5.3 percent for the year ending June 2021.

Real average hourly earnings for production and nonsupervisory employees decreased 2.2 percent from June 2020 to June 2021. The change in real average hourly earnings combined with an increase of 0.6 percent in the average workweek resulted in a 1.6-percent decrease in real average weekly earnings over this period. The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) rose 6.0 percent for the year ending June 2021.

These data are from the Current Employment Statistics and Consumer Price Index programs and are seasonally adjusted. Real earnings data for the most recent two months are preliminary. To learn more, see "Real Earnings — June 2021." The Consumer Price Index is used to adjust earnings estimates for inflation. Production and nonsupervisory data relate to production employees in mining and logging and manufacturing, construction employees in construction, and nonsupervisory employees in the service-providing industries.
