Consumer Price Index up 7.1 percent over the year ended November 2022

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers rose 0.1 percent in November 2022, seasonally adjusted, after increasing 0.4 percent in October. Over the past 12 months, the all items index increased 7.1 percent, not seasonally adjusted; this was the smallest 12-month increase since December 2021.

Prices for food increased 0.5 percent in November 2022, following a 0.6-percent increase in October. Food prices have increased 10.6 percent over the past year. Within this category, prices of food at home rose 12.0 percent over the last 12 months, while prices of food away from home rose 8.5 percent.
Prices for energy decreased 1.6 percent in November 2022, after rising 1.8 percent in October. Energy prices rose 13.1 percent over the past 12 months. Within the energy category, gasoline prices increased 10.1 percent over the year and the fuel oil prices rose 65.7 percent. Prices for electricity rose 13.7 percent over the last 12 months, while prices for natural gas increased 15.5 percent over the year.
Prices for all items less food and energy rose 0.2 percent in November, its smallest increase since August 2021. The all items less food and energy index increased 6.0 percent over the last 12 months. Within this category, prices for shelter increased 7.1 percent over the last year, accounting for nearly half of the total increase in all items less food and energy. Other notable increases over the past year include household furnishings and operations, medical care, new vehicles, and recreation.
