In May 2022, nonfarm payroll employment increased over the year in 122 metropolitan areas and was essentially unchanged in 267 areas. The largest percentage gains in employment from May 2021 to May 2022 occurred in Atlantic City-Hammonton, New Jersey (where employment increased 15,200 or 12.5 percent), Las Vegas-Henderson-Paradise, Nevada (87,100; 9.0 percent), and Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas (294,700; 7.7 percent).

Over-the-year employment increases of at least 6.0 percent were recorded in 10 other areas: Odessa, Texas; Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, Florida; North Port-Sarasota-Bradenton, Florida; Austin-Round Rock, Texas; Nashville-Davidson--Murfreesboro--Franklin, Tennessee; Flagstaff, Arizona; Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, Georgia; Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, Texas; Midland, Texas; and Santa Fe, New Mexico.
In terms of the number of jobs, the largest over-the-year increases occurred in New York-Newark-Jersey City, New York-New Jersey-Pennsylvania (509,500; 5.5 percent), Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, California (306,800; 5.2 percent), and Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas.
Over-the-year employment increases of at least 100,000 were also recorded in Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, Illinois-Indiana-Wisconsin (212,100 or 4.7 percent), Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, Texas (185,500; 6.1 percent), Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, Georgia (170,300; 6.1 percent) and 6 other areas.
Nonfarm employment increased over the year in 44 metropolitan areas with a 2010 Census population of at least a million, while employment was essentially unchanged in 7 areas. The largest over-the-year percentage increase in employment in these large metropolitan areas occurred in Las Vegas-Henderson-Paradise, Nevada, followed by Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas, and Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, Florida.
