From December 2021 to March 2022, gross job gains at opening and expanding private-sector establishments were 8.4 million. Gross job losses at closing and contracting private-sector establishments were 6.9 million. The difference between the job gains and the job losses yielded a net employment gain of 1.5 million jobs during the first quarter of 2022.

The number of job gains in the first quarter of 2022 decreased by 1.1 million jobs from the fourth quarter of 2021, while the number of job losses increased 205,000. In the fourth quarter of 2021, gross job gains were 9.6 million, gross job losses 6.7 million, yielding a positive net change of 2.9 million.
Over the period before the COVID-19 pandemic from the first quarter of 2012 to the fourth quarter of 2019, the net change averaged 549,000 jobs per quarter. During 2021, the net change averaged 1.8 million jobs per quarter.
