From March 2022 to June 2022, gross job gains from opening and expanding private-sector establishments were 8.3 million, a decrease of 185,000 jobs from the previous quarter. Over this period, gross job losses from closing and contracting private-sector establishments were 8.5 million, an increase of 1.6 million jobs from the previous quarter. The difference between the number of gross job gains and the number of gross job losses yielded a net employment loss of 287,000 jobs in the private sector during the second quarter of 2022. Gross job losses surpassed gross job gains in 36 states, the District of Columbia, and the Virgin Islands in the second quarter of 2022.
In the second quarter of 2022, California led the nation in both job losses (1,109,727) and job gains (1,021,819). Texas followed with 686,471 job losses and 728,431 gains. Florida led the nation in net job gains (53,252), having lost 557,231 jobs and gained 610,483 jobs. Maine gained a net total of 50,647 jobs, reflecting 42,750 job losses and 93,397 job gains.

As a percent of total state employment, Alaska led the nation in its job losses rate (9.6 percent). Maine led the nation in its job gains rate (17.7 percent). Montana also ranked high, with a job losses rate of 9.4 percent and a job gains rate of 8.2 percent. As a percent of total state employment, Massachusetts had the lowest job losses rate (5.4 percent), followed by Pennsylvania (5.6 percent).
